Wine Review – 2008 Domaine D’Aupilhac Coteaux du Languedoc “Lou Maset”, France

Purchase Details: Can’t remember what I purchased this for at Kermit Lynch Wine Merchant in Berkeley, California.  I’m thinking $12.95ish.

Tasting Notes: In the glass, a lively crimson hue.  Aromas of raspberry, cherry, eucalyptus and a slight leafiness.  In the mouth, cranberries, sour cherries, raspberries and garrigue.  Fresh and lively acidity throughout, with a dry finish and floral aftertaste.

Although the wine was light in body, there were some pretty firm tannins that along with the ripe fruity nature of the wine, were confusing my palate.  Usually when I taste a wine that has rough and firm tannins, the fruit is usually not there and underdeveloped.  In other words the wine is young and probably not yet ready to drink.  This D’Aupilhac was displaying two characteristics that in my experience, don’t usually happen at the same time.  I think that’s why the wine was interesting and intriguing.

Food Pairing & Context in Which to Enjoy: We had this with pork chops, kale and roasted potatoes and it was fine.  The fruitiness and tannic nature of this wine would also lend itself well to fattier and saltier dishes; think cured meats, salty/briny cheeses and even olives.

Winery & Other Background Information: Like many of the estates in the Kermit Lynch portfolio, Domaine D’Aupilhac farms organically and sustainably.  Although Sylvain Fadat’s family has been making wine for over 500 years, Sylvain has only been making wine as an independent vigneron at Domaine d’Aupilhac since 1989.

Talk about rustic and unsophisticated, between 1989 and 1992, the wine was being made in old bowsers (tanks used to re-fuel aircraft) parked outdoors.  Not until 1993 did they build covered facilities and introduced modern equipment.  In 1997, they continued their path into the 21st century winemaking world and built large underground cellars to house the barrels and casks.
