Winery: Tricycle Wine Co.
Bottling: 2006 Obsidian Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon
Sub-Region: Red Hills Lake County, Northern California Coast
Estimated Retail Price: $28
Purchase Details: Purchased this bottle for $24.95 plus tax at San Francisco Wine Trading Company in the Sunset neighborhood of San Francisco, California.
Tasting Notes: In the glass, ominous opaque red hues. On the nose, dark red berries, cherries, mint and cocoa. In the mouth, intense flavors of dried cherries, dried berries, herbs, chocolate, clove and cocoa. Chocolate covered cherries rolled in edible graphite. How about that? This wine has tremendous structure, balance, elegance and power all rolled up in one 750 ml bottle. Winemaker Michael Terrien states that you can easily age this wine for 10, even 15 years. One taste, and like me, you’ll surely agree.
This cabernet sauvignon is just as good if not better than the first vintage I ever tried, the 2003. At that point it retailed for around $20 which made it an absolute steal. This wine seriously crushes and outperforms any cabernet in this price range and even those in the $40-$50 range.
Food Pairing & Context in Which to Enjoy: You can get elegant with a duck confit coasted with a fancy sauce of some kind, or you can get rustic on it and break out the red wine braised short ribs. Either way, your palate is going to be happy.
Winery & Other Background Information: The vineyard where the grapes are sourced from sit on a ridge high up in the Red Hills Lake County AVA, where elevations attain heights between 2300’ to 2600’. A unique aspect of this vineyard is that it sits on huge beds of Obsidian rock, which means additional struggling for the vines and better overall drainage for the vineyard. In short, better grapes for wine. Their wines are aged in Hungarian oak from a cooperage that they also own in Hungary and is another element that adds complexity to their wines.
I love the gang over at Tricycle Wine Company. Brothers Arpad and Peter Molnar, good friend and winemaker Michael Terrien and Sales Manager Kent Fortner are a great bunch of guys doing the right thing. I’ve met Arpad several times as well as Kent the national sales manager, and Peter Molnar on one occasion when we had our store, and they are the nicest, most down to earth dudes making and selling good wine.
The Tricycle Wine Company is made up of three labels — Obsidian Ridge, Molnar Family which consists of a chardonnay and pinot noir and the Kazmer & Blaise label which is premium pinot noir and chardonnay from a plot in their Poseidon Vineyard in Carneros called Primo’s Hill.
