Tasting Notes: In the glass, a very dark ruby garnet. On the nose, dark fruits that were slightly muted and a little shy. In the mouth, black cherries, rosemary, plum, forest floor and mushrooms – quintessential, broad shouldered Russian River Pinot Noir. Mouth-filling, well-structured, muscular, juicy and ripe; this is a cab lovers pinot.
I kept forgetting that we paid only twenty bucks for this wine. I think this wine over-delivers and is a great value for a pinot noir in this price range.
Food Pairing & Context in Which to Enjoy: You want to drink pinot with your steak? This is the wine to do it with. Heavily sauced dishes, grilled fare and anything roasted would pair nicely with this wine.
Winery & Other Background Information: The wines of Pali Wine Co. are made by Brian Loring of Loring Wine Co. The wines of Pali like Loring, focuses on producing premium pinot noir sourced from single vineyard sites from around the state. One taste of Pali wines and you’ll see that Loring has definitely lent his touch a la the winemaking process.
I’ve tasted only a handful of pinots from the Pali portfolio and the majority of them require some time in the cellar to really show themselves. These new AVA blends from the Russian River and Santa Barbara are a good introduction and great examples of the wine style exhibited in the Pali portfolio. Think of the “Bluffs” bottling as representative of the single vineyard wines, except without the layers of complexity, closed fruit and burly tannins the single vineyard wines possess.
