Purchase Details: A good buddy of mine busted this out, just when I was ready to call it a night.  Obviously I stayed once this bottle made an appearance on the table.

Tasting Notes: A touch of white pepper, black pepper and a mélange of red berry fruit on the nose.  In the mouth the wine had that distinctive Turley zinfandel flavor.  It’s indescribable with simple words; you have to just experience the wines themselves across different vineyards and vintages to see what I mean.

Dense, chewy, spicy and loads of wild red berry fruit were the dominating flavors in this wine.  A little minty character somewhere in there as well.  When you taste Turley wines early in their lives they are completely different animals than when they have a little age on them.  Personally I like them better with a little cellar time to their credit.  Although they’re dense, concentrated wines, I never really find them over the top, and in fact find them on the elegant side for a California zinfandel once you do age them a bit.

Food Pairing & Context in Which to Enjoy: Bring this wine out only for people who really appreciate the joys of California zinfandel.  Turley wines, like Ridge Vineyard wines are great examples of California zinfandels that age very well, so if you happen across any, buy a couple of bottles, drink some now and lay some down for the future.

Winery & Other Background Information: Turley has been a long-standing cult-producer of amazing California zinfandels for some time now.  This was another wine that was highly sought after when we ran our little wine shop.  Recently though, I’ve seen their wines more often on retail shelves.

I’m thinking that the economy must really be bad to see these wines so regularly on shelves, when they were more commonly known as “back room” wines.  Bad economy or not though, the only thing that matters in the end is that Turley wines are definitely some of the most pleasurable wines to drink and experience.
